PENETRATING AND LOOSENING EFFICIENCY
A dis-used ceased engine cylinder head was employed where it was assumed that all nuts had been tightened under identical torque and that weathering and rusting was uniform.
A 10 second spray of each product was applied to separate nuts and timing commenced. After exactly 5 minutes, a torque wrench pre-set to 50Nm² was used to determine if the nuts had loosened. This was repeated at 1 minute intervals and out findings tabled as follows:
SAMPLE |
LOOSENING TIME AT 50Nm² |
SPIN - OFF |
5 Minutes (Maximum) |
SPANJAARD |
7 Minutes |
Q - 10 |
> 30 Minutes |
WD - 40 |
> 30 Minutes |
RUST INHIBITING QUALITIES
A series of 3" wire nails taken from the same packet were subjected to 10 second sprays of each product, allowed to dry for 10 minutes, then immersed to half their length in water, free access to air being permitted.
SAMPLE |
OBSERVATION |
SPIN - OFF |
No rusting over length of nail visible after 7 days |
WD - 40 |
Overall rusting of nail body in 7 days |
SPANJAARD - SPARK |
No rusting over length of nail visible after 7 days |
Q - 10 |
No rusting over length of nail visible after 7 days |
FLASH POINTS
Flash points were performed on the material after venting off the propellant. These were determined using the Penski-Martin close cup method in accordance with ASTM D-93, results and comments being as follows:
SAMPLE |
FLASH POINT |
SPIN - OFF |
No flash obtained |
SPANJAARD - SPARK |
Ambient temperature 22ºC |
WD - 40 |
51ºC |
Q - 10 |
No flash obtained |
Please note that the flash point test indicates the flammability of the penetrating oils.
CONCLUSION
Based on the prescribed test procedures and results, it is in our opinion that Spin-off is the superior product.
This can be established from the loosening efficiency and flash point results this being the only product tested to demonstrate the lowest loosening time and no measurable flash point.
Independant testing was conducted on Spin-Off, by INSPECTORATE M&L (PTY) LTD (British Standards Institution).
